Montonale, a platinum Lugana at the “Decanter Awards”

They are one of the emerging wineries of the “New Lugana Generation”, a company of ancient roots and recent relaunch, with extraordinary wines now launched to the full international recognition thanks to the Decanter World Wine Awards, the most prestigious oenological competition in the world. Where Montonale, the Desenzano del Garda based company, has won the platinum medal (95 points) and the title of Best in Show – Best White Single-Varietal thanks to Lugana Orestilla 2015.

“It is a prize to the great potential of the lands of Lugana”, said Roberto Girelli, oenologist at the summit of the cellar with his brothers Claudio and Valentino: the builders of a success that has its foundations in 2002, with the total conversion of vineyards planted in the early 1900s by great-grandfather Francesco. It was then that the three brothers began to conceive the dream of a relaunch of the family business, which was further consolidated in 2011 with the construction of a new and extremely innovative winery in rice straw, which together with a wooden structure guarantees a natural insulation that minimizes energy waste.

With 25 hectares of vineyard, Montonale (the name comes from the homonymous village where the winery hass its home) currently produces 80,000 bottles: with the two really gorgeous Lugana in the foreground, the Montunal (to be tasted even in the old vintages to tame the evolutionary potential) and the complex, fascinating Orestilla, coming from the one single vineyard of the same name, with an eight months aging plus then in bottle, rightly brought to triumphs at Decanter by the jury led by Steven Spurrier. Not satisfied, the company has brought home another important prize at this time: the one for the best Lugana 2016 assigned to Montunal by the Gran Priory of Lugana under the annual Vinalia 2017 contest.
