The Lugana phenomenon knows no boundaries: according to the president of the Consortium, Luca Formentini, with the harvest of 2015 there will be a new production growth that will bring the famous white wine of Lake Garda over the threshold of 15 million bottles.
“In recent times our production has been growing about 100 new hectares each year, although the boundaries of our Doc have remained the same since 1967 – says the president -. With the harvest of 2015, we will go over 1500 hectares, but we still have room to grow: according to an analysis of the consortium, the potential wineyard within the current boundaries could expand up to 3000 hectares. But it is very important to note that this increase in production is following the upward trend in sales, also linked to the ability of the Lugana to conquer new markets, expanding its presence on different scenarios. ”
The outlook for the harvest of Lugana 2015 are positive: the grapes are currently in excellent sanitary conditions, aided by weather conditions that have only partially “stressed” plants, however with a positive influenze on the parasitic aspects. The quantities are ok, and the rains in late July, which brought about 20 millimeters of water on the area, have been providential though certainly not decisive. The ripening curve is ahead by about a week compared to the seasonal average, but everything will depend on the weather of the next few weeks, and especially by the continuation or not of the current state of drought. Still the first grapes should fall in mid-September, for an expected total of about 170 thousand tons of grapes. It is also important to remember that vintage 2015 will bring about a new rule, recently introduced in the production regulations, that says Lugana produced this year will not be available on market before January 15 of the following year, in this case 2016.
