A turning point that aims to overcome the fragmentation of the past, laying the groundwork to give new impetus to Valtènesi by strengthening the cohesion between producers: this is the objective of the denomination Riviera del Garda Classico, presented at Vinitaly by the Consortium Valtènesi vertices (the President Alexander Luzzago and director Carlo Alberto Panont) together with the agriculture councilor of Lombardy Region, Gianni Fava, the leader of Confagricoltura Brescia Francesco Martinoni, the vice president of Coldiretti Brescia (and of Franciacorta Consortium) Silvano Brescianini, and the Italia in Rosa president, Luigi Alberti.
This is an important innovation for the Garda viticulture, which will become operational in the vintage 2017: in practice the historical manes Riviera del Garda Bresciano and Garda Classico, commonly used on the territory until last year, come together in a new, unique name Riviera Del Garda Classico, in which the Valtènesi appellation represents the apex of the qualitative pyramid.
This is the result that has been reached after the territorial pact signed at the beginning of 2016 by an increase of the representation to 90% of the Valtènesi Consortium membership base: an agreement in which all the producers agreed to bring at the height of quality and identity the appellation Valtènesi, thanks to an agreement on geographical boundaries and on the aphelographic base. This has in fact led to overcoming the existing fragmentation situation setting the stage for a new cohesion.
“We essentially proceeded to the unification of the two names in a new one, inside which there’s an appellation that all are committed to emphasizing favoring the production of Valtènesi – says the president of the Consortium Valtènesi, Alessandro Luzzago -. Riviera del Garda Classico will then be the only name used from the 2017 harvest as it has now definitively replaced the previous “.
The Riviera del Garda Classico denomination includes the production of Red, Rosé, White, Sparkling Rosé and Groppello as a varietal wine. For those who produce Valtènesi, both Chiaretto and red, there is a duty to report the appellation Valtènesi over the naming of the Riviera name of the Garda Classico with at least twice the size. “The written name in full – concludes the president Luzzago – will work as geolocation of a name, Valtènesi in fact, still not well known as that of Lake Garda”.
