One of the most important groups in the Italian wine system has finally landed on Garda: Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo has in fact acquired the majority (80%) of Cà Maiol, the historic Desenzano winery, among the best-known Lugana brands but with important ramifications also in the denomination Valtènesi. Fabio Contato, image and symbol of the cellar, will remain in the company as chairman of the new board.

Cà Maiol is now a reality of 140 hectares (some of which have already been converted to organic agriculture) with a production that now has reached 1.6 million bottles, of which at least 350 thousand of Chiaretto and Groppello based reds of Valtènesi Doc: 2017 sales are expected to reach 10 million euros, with an export quota of 55%.

Fabio Contato was honored that the Marzotto, one of the most important families in the world of Italian economy, decided to invest in his company and Doc Lugana: a choice that for the Veneto group, 19 million bottles sold in 90 countries of the world for a 2016 turnover of 157 million, assumes a strategic dimension of strengthening their position in the white wine segment by entering a Doc that is one of the most successful phenomenon seen in the Italian enology world for the last ten years.

“We are expecting a period of great professional growth – said Contato-  This operation is a prelude to a path of investments in image, quality and production structure that will enable Cà Maiol to continue to compete on an increasingly intense international scenario. ”

“We want to bring Lugana all our know-how to further strengthen its leading position globally,” said Santa Margherita president Gaetano Marzotto, while managing director Ettore Nicoletto (in the picture on the right with Fabio Contato) has underlined that this acquisition strengthens the presence in Lombardy of a group already present in Franciacorta in the stock of Ca ‘del Bosco. “For Lugana – he said – it’s time for a new stage of growth that will benefit the entire local system.”
