A modern idea of development must must today consider  primarily the needs of the environment, and not the other way: a concept that Luca Formentini, president of the Consortium for the Protection of Lugana wine, recently spoke about in Vinitaly, where the battle to save part of the Lugana vineyards from the construction of the new railway line Tav (High speed train) has been relaunched together with hashtag #savelugana, which has become a global symbol of the struggle of the producers of this part of Garda Lake for their land safeguard.

“I am proud to say that on this issue we have had a world wide solidarity – explains Formentini, at the head of the consortium with director Carlo Veronese -. We enjoyed great media hype because everyone understood that our struggle was concerned with the preservation of the environment and was not just driven by economic reasons. It’s been a wonderful adventure, which led municipalities, associations, agricultural organizations and many different realities to unite on a common line, with a convergence unprecedented in which interests have gone beyond the political flags”.

But the battle of “Lugana Boys” is not over yet. “Given also the recent doubts emerged at the institutional level, we will relaunch our position demanding that the part of Tav which cross Garda is suspended to consider the use of the railway line that already exists: an alternative whose validity both in environmental and economic terms is appearing now clear to everybody. I think I can now say that what we have proposed is the only acceptable way to cross this narrow and delicate part of Garda territory, and general mobilization has now given rise to a situation in which the solution advocated by us has all the credentials to be taken into serious consideration. “
